HM Revenue & Customs Advise Tax Payers to be Vigilant
HMRC are warning taxpayers to be vigilant following reports that fraudsters are making calls portraying themselves as the taxman.
The criminals state they are calling from HMRC to advise them that a tax rebate is due and then ask for bank details over the phone. They then attempt to take money from the account using the details provided.
HM Revenue & Customs warn that victims risk having their bank accounts emptied and their details sold on to organised criminal gangs.
Chris Hopson, director or Customer Contact at the HMRC said:
"We only ever contact customers who are due a tax refund in writing by post. We never use telephone calls, emails or external companies in these circumstances. We strongly urge anyone receiving such phone calls not to give any information to the caller, but report it to the police sraight away".
If any client recieves an email claiming to be from the HMRC, they recommend that they send it to them for investigation before deleting it permanently and they also ask clients to notify them if any suspicious telephone calls are received.
